Lincoln, NE - The Nebraska Jazz Orchestra announces auditions for the
2009 Young Jazz Artist Competition. This competition provides an
outstanding opportunity for students to audition to perform with some
of the finest jazz musicians in Nebraska in front of a live audience.
The first prize winner of this competition will win a cash prize of
$250 and will perform with the Nebraska Jazz Orchestra and guest artist
Wayne Bergeron at the "Plays Well With Others" concert to be held on
Thursday, October 29, 2009 at the Cornhusker Marriott in Lincoln, NE. A
second place winner will be selected to receive a $100 cash prize.
The 2009 Young Jazz Artist Competition is sponsored by the Dillon Foundation.
Rules, Guidelines & Eligibility:
Open to musicians who have not reached their 22nd birthday on or before October 29, 2009. Previous winners are not eligible.
Instrumentation: saxophone, trumpet, trombone, guitar, piano, bass, drums, vibes
If selected, musicians MUST be available for the following:
Rehearsal: Wednesday, October 28, 2009, 7:00-9:30 p.m.
O’Donnell Auditorium, Nebraska Wesleyan University, Lincoln
Sound Check: Thursday, October 29, 2009, 5:00-6:00 p.m.
Cornhusker Marriott, 333 South 13th Street, Lincoln
Concert: Thursday, October 29, 2009, 7:30 p.m.

Selected musicians must furnish transportation & instruments (except piano).
Applicants must prepare a recorded audition (Cassette or CD). Recordings must include two improvised solos with live or recorded accompaniment such as Jamey Aebersold recordings. One recording should include four choruses of blues in any key in a jazz (swing) style and the second should contain two choruses of a well-known jazz standard (not blues) in any key at any tempo (Latin styles and ballads are acceptable).
Past winners of the Young Jazz Artist Competition include: Andrew Janak, Gabriela Praetzel, Paul Krueger, Jordan Elsberry, Brett Lindaman, Tommy van den Berg, Alex Levitov, Derek Molacek, Bryant Scott, Seth Schoen, Chris Steinke, Broc Hempel, and Frank Basile.
