Local Ska Band 'Heat Machine' Takes on the East Coast

It was a hot summer evening when we all sat down in a veritable sweat lodge of a loft.  I was interviewing four members of the Lincoln ska band called, ironically enough, the Heat Machine.   

We figured an interview with everyone would be impractical at best, so I spoke with guitarist, Nick Tarlowski, and vocalists Meg Mahannah, Christina Creager and Genni Bachinski. 

While there are technically seven official members, the band has a rotating lineup as needed - especially helpful if one of the members can’t make a show or a tour.  For instance, Christina will be unavailable for the tour this summer, so Genni will take her place.

New Bourbon Theatre Open and Ready to Rock

The Bourbon Theatre offered its first concert last Saturday, May 16th.  Formerly the State Theatre, the Bourbon Theatre, located at 1415 'O' Street, is now owned by Jeremiah and Leah Moore, who also own music venue Box Awesome. But the name and the owners aren’t the only new aspects of this historic building. Some of the notable improvements include a bigger stage, a lighting rig that can descend from the ceiling, and a new sound system.

The State Theatre was built in 1915 and operated as a movie theater until closing in 1992.  Since then, the building has seen many owners and endured a rather fruitless 17 years. 

Academy of Rock a Healthy Endeavor for Kids, Families and the Lincoln Music Community

It’s common to hear live music radiating from the doorway of the Zoo Bar as you walk by on any given evening. But passersby who took a closer look this Saturday may have been surprised at just who was in the band.

The drummer could barely be seen over the framework of his drumset, and the two guitarists, belting out chords from a Weezer song, were somewhat dwarfed by their instruments. Master Attack Plan is made up of one second-grader and two sixth-graders. But don’t let their ages fool you. These kids know how to rock and roll.

ORGAN CONCERT BY ANNETTE RICHARDS TO BE PRESENTED IN LINCOLN

The last concert of the season for the Lincoln Organ Showcase will be at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, May 17, with Annette Richards at Cornerstone Chapel, 640 N. 16 St.

As a performer, Ms. Richards specializes in music of the Italian and North German Baroque, and has played concerts on numerous historic and modern instruments in Europe and the United States.

She also regularly performs music from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and has won prizes in international competitions including the 1992 Dublin International Organ Competition and first prize for organ duo with David Yearsley at the Bruges Early Music Festival in 1994. Her CD, Melchior Schildt and the North German Organ Art, was recorded on the historic organ at Roskilde Cathedral, Denmark.

Ms. Richards, who has won numerous organ-playing honors, is Professor of Music and University Organist at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.  Her program in Lincoln will include Bach, Buxtehude, Sweelinck, and Mendelssohn. 

Lincoln Organ Showcase is an organ recital series sponsored by the Lincoln chapter of the American Guild of Organists.  LOS programs feature different organs throughout the city of Lincoln during each season.
