“The piece is deeply emotional, and I find that I cannot play it without a true investment of myself,” Helseth said.
Helseth
and Hanrahan will perform the Britten work, a staple of tenor and horn
repertoire, with Lincoln’s Symphony Orchestra. LSO presents “A
Little Night Music” on Saturday, February 6, at 7:30 p.m., at Kimball Recital
Hall. The concert begins with
the Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 by J.S. Bach and the
Britten Serenade, and finishes with
Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik and
Richard Strauss’s Suite for 13 Winds.
“I hope the audience takes away a sense of beauty and peace that this world so desperately needs today,” Hanrahan said.
The Suite for 13 Winds will feature nine dancers from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln School of Dance and original choreography by Susan Levine, assistant professor of dance at UNL.
“Adding a visual component to the artistic experience gives patrons one more way to connect to the music,” said Barbara Zach, LSO’s executive director. "We are thrilled to work with Susan Levine, who has developed a unique dance element that I believe our audience will absolutely love.”
Hanrahan, Helseth, and LSO Music Director Edward Polochick will participate in LSO’s pre-concert chat, hosted by William Stibor, music director for NET Radio. The pre-concert chat will be held the evening of the concert from 6:45-7:15 p.m. in the lower lobby of Kimball Recital Hall.
Corporate Sponsor for “A Little Night Music” is First National Bank. The Nebraska Arts Council and the American Restoration and Recovery Act of 2009 also provided support toward LSO’s 2009-10 season.
