“Sax & the City” will be held Friday, February 5, 2010, at the Cornhusker Marriott, 333 South 13th Street in Lincoln, Nebraska at 7:30 p.m. Priority seating for season ticket holders and Jazz Club members is at 7:00 p.m., with general admission seating beginning at 7:15 p.m. Single admission tickets are $20 for Adults and $10 for Students and may be purchased by contacting the Nebraska Jazz Orchestra business office at (402) 477-8446 or njo@artsincorporated.org.
Paul Haar is Director of Jazz Studies and Assistant Professor of Saxophone at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln School of Music where he teaches applied saxophone and directs UNL Jazz Ensemble I. Prior to his appointment in 2004, Dr. Haar held positions at the University of Tennessee, the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Kansas. Specializing in a variety of aspects of saxophone performance and pedagogy, Dr. Haar maintains an active career as a soloist, clinician and adjudicator, appearing throughout the United States and Canada. He has performed with such artists as Dave Brubeck, James Moody, The Manhattan Transfer, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Donald Brown, and has backed such noted entertainers as the Temptations, The Chiffons, 5 by Design, Jerry Lewis and Bob Newhart. He has recorded on the Sea Breeze label (as a member of the Boulevard Big Band) with vocalist Kevin Mahogany and saxophonist Eric Marienthal.
In addition to being an active member of The North American Saxophone Alliance, Music Educators National Conference and The International Association for Jazz Education, Dr. Haar serves as the personal director for the annual IAJE conference and is a member of the editorial board for the Jazz Educators Journal. A contributing writer to The Saxophone Journal and Jazz Times Magazine, he has also published pieces in The Instrumentalist, and Tennessee Musician magazines.
A native of Fremont, Nebraska he holds a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree from The University of Texas at Austin (2004) where he studied with the renowned saxophonist Harvey Pittel, a Masters of Music Degree (1996) and Bachelors of Music Degree (1994) from The University of Kansas where he studied with Vincent Gnojek, Dan Gailey and Dick Wright.
Young Lions All-Star Band
This all-star student band is an auditioned group comprised of outstanding student musicians from Nebraska and surrounding states. Students under the age of 21 are eligible to audition, and the most promising young musicians are selected to rehearse and perform at the Nebraska Jazz Orchestra’s Learning from the Master concert with their renowned guest artist. The Young Lions All-Star Band is one of the Nebraska Jazz Orchestra’s many educational outreach programs
