Lincoln’s Symphony Orchestra Presents Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony

LSO’s season finale presents one of music’s most beloved works, Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, which closes with the familiar melody “Ode to Joy.”  

Following Beethoven’s Consecration of the House Overture, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 features the Nebraska Wesleyan and Lincoln Civic choirs, directed by Dr. William Wyman. Featured soloists are Jamie Reimer, Rebecca Shane, Jeff Keele and Ryan MacPherson.  

“There is nothing quite as exciting for me as the feeling of choral energy as is surrounds you as a soloist,” Shane said. “When this is combined with orchestral brilliance, the feeling is more overwhelming that words can express.”

Maine-Based Alternative Folk Duo Arborea to Perform at Clawfoot House April 7

Maine-based alternative folk duo Arborea (wife and husband Shanti and Buck Curran) will be performing in Lincoln on Wednesday, April 7, at 8 pm at Clawfoot House on 1042 F St. 

Fresh back from an extensive European tour--and compilation curation and collaborations that associate the group with psych folk artists such as Devendra Banhart, Alela Diane, and Marissa Nadler--Arborea is known for minimalist, resonant songs on banjo and guitar with ethereal vocals.

Leaves of Life, a compilation curated by Buck Curran, shows these musicians' commitment to global causes, as all proceeds from the sales of the record are going to support vital hunger relief programs run by the UN World Food Program.

Nebraska Jazz Orchestra Announces 'Tribute to Count Basie' Concert

Join the Nebraska Jazz Orchestra as they present the final concert of the 2009-2010 season, "Tribute to Count Basie,"  featuring Lincoln's own Bob Krueger on trumpet, and the 2010 Young Jazz Artist Winner, Tommy Krueger.

Selections will include  tunes from the Count Basie Library such as "Whirlybird,"  "Li'l Darlin," "How Sweet It Is," and "Blues in Hoss Flat."  Also featured will be the world premiere of Mark Benson's ballad, "The Ides of March" and Duke Ellington's "Concerto for Cootie" and "Waynard & Maynard". This concert is sponsored in part by the Dillon Foundation.

Bryan and Mac McCune Team Up for a Special Capital Jazz Society Performance

Capital Jazz Society proudly presents a special performance by cornetist and former Lincolnite Bryan McCune as part of the Lincoln Jazz Series on Wednesday, March 31, 2010.  The band will include a stellar line up of former bandmates, including Lincoln’s own John Scofield, Tom Larson, and Bill Wimmer. 

Making a trek from Spokane, WA, Lincoln ex-pat Dana Weary will be featured on guitar.  Omaha’s Mark Luebbe will round out the rhythm section on bass.  Bryan’s father, Midwest trumpet icon Mac McCune, will join the band in a rare public performance by the two together. 

The show will include standards, not-so-standards, and original material, with electric and acoustic perspectives. Following the program, an old fashioned jam session may ensue.

Songwriter Power Ranger Returns for One Night Only March 27th

Songwriter Power Ranger was an acoustic concert series that started in spring 2009 and ran through the autumn of that same year.  It was a beautiful partnership between two Lincoln music-scene veterans (Cory Kibler and Ember Schrag) and Box Awesome/The Bourbon Theatre.

It was named so, because these gatherings of local songwriters resembled the coming together of the Power Rangers to create one enormous, crime-fighting robot, only with songs and drinks instead of karate-chopping and explosions.

Spending over half the year on the road, Cornmeal continues to forge a path all their own, pushing the boundaries of bluegrass, Americana and folk for a whole new generation of music lovers. Steeped in the tradition of musical acts such as Old and in the Way, John Hartford, and New Grass Revival, Cornmeal has proven to be an influential presence in the world of roots music. Cornmeal has consistently evolved its sound and stage performance using bluegrass as a springboard for long improvisational work and songs ranging from country, rock, and blues to jazz, funk and disco.

Chiara Quartet Continues Beethoven Cycle as a Part of the Hixson-Lied Concert Series

On Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at 7:30 p.m. at the Sheldon Museum of Art (12 & R Streets), the Chiara Quartet (Rebecca Fischer and Julie Yoon, violins; Jonah Sirota, viola; and Gregory Beaver, cello) will perform the third concert in the inaugural season of the Hixson-Lied Concert Series presented by The University of Nebraska, Lincoln, School of Music in the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts.

The new Hixson-Lied Concert Series is the first time The University of Nebraska-Lincoln will present the Artists-in-Residence in a subscription concert series.

To launch the new concert series, the Chiara String Quartet will present the complete string quartets of Beethoven over the next two seasons. This is the first time since 1990 that all of Beethoven’s string quartets have been performed in Lincoln.

During the 2009-10 season, the Chiara offers three concerts, each featuring a work from the early, middle, and late periods of Beethoven's life. This concert will feature Beethoven’s String Quartet in Quartet in F Major, Op. 18, No. 1; Quartet in F minor, Op. 95; and Quartet in E-flat Major, Op. 127.

Three Opportunities to See Amy Denio This Week in Lincoln

This is Women's Week, and among the many women honored by UNL for their roles in politics, filmmaking, agriculture and other forms of culture creation is musician, composer and producer Amy Denio, of Seattle, Washington and Italy.  Brought here by Clawfoot House and the Berman Music Foundation, Denio will share her multi-instrumentalist world-indie sound and her extensive life experiences in three different venues. 

Tonight is the first of three opportunities, when Denio will join the Clawfoot Salon for Female Musicians in a special, free, on-campus session at the UNL Union at 7 p.m.

Denio densely packs a diverse array of musical accomplishments, styles and experiences.  A lifelong, self-taught musician who performs solo and in collaborations, Denio composes sound scores and commissioned pieces and performs extensively all over the world.  Her instruments include accordion, saxophone, guitar, bass, her voice and “other resonating objects.” 

Free Trumpet Master Class Offered Friday, March 5

Adam Lambert, Assistant Professor of Music at Chadron State College, will present a trumpet master class on Friday, March 5, 2:00 p.m. at Nebraska Wesleyan University. The event will be held in Emerson Recital Hall, located on the lower level of Rogers Center for Fine Arts, 50th & Huntington, Lincoln.

Lambert is Director of Bands and Brass Studies at Chadron State, and is an active trumpet educator, performer and clinician in both classical and jazz idioms. He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in trumpet performance and jazz studies from the University of North Texas.

He will be assisted by James Margetts, piano. Margetts, assistant professor of piano at Chadron State, holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in piano performance from the University of Cincinnati.

The master class is free and open to the public.
