"Art of Rock" Festival Turns Up the Volume August 7th

Over the last week or so, downtown Lincoln has been decorated with numerous sidewalk surprises: bright, detailed chalk drawings promoting the “Art of Rock” festival.

This Saturday, the rock of both roll fame and the more common cement variety will be celebrated in the first annual festival, hosted by the Northeast Family Center’s Academy of Rock program.

“It’s going to be wild,” said Nick Tarlowski, who’s been an instructor with the Academy of Rock since it first started five years ago. “It’s just fun for everybody.”

The event begins at noon on Friday, and will feature a rock fashion show, rockstar makeovers, karaoke and air guitar, door prizes, sidewalk chalk and more, said program director and event organizer Jason Schmit. It will encompass 14^th Street from O Street to P Street, with events and concerts held at the Zoo Bar, Duffy’s Tavern and the Bourbon Theatre, as well.

Lincoln Municipal Band Presents “On Broadway: Music from the Stage” August 1st

Join the Lincoln Municipal Band as it continues its 2010 Summer Concert Series on Sunday, August 1, 2010 at 7:00 p.m., with a concert entitled “On Broadway.” This concert will celebrate music composed for the dramatic stage and will be conducted by Bob Krueger.

The band will feature the “Gershwin Medley” along with “Selections from Les Miserables,” and “Symphonic Dances from Fiddler on the Roof.” At the concert, representatives from many of Lincoln’s theater organizations will be present to share information about their upcoming performances. Bring a picnic dinner, and enjoy a beautiful evening of music, family, and friends!

The featured guest soloist for the evening will be trumpeter Dean Haist.

All Lincoln Municipal Band concerts are held at the John Shildneck Memorial Bandshell in Antelope Park and are FREE and open to the public.

Lincoln Municipal Band Presents 'Young at Heart: Classic Cars on Display' July 25th

Join the Lincoln Municipal Band as they continue their 2010 Summer Concert Series on Sunday, July 25, 2010 at 7:00 p.m., with a concert entitled “Young at Heart.” This concert will celebrate our mature concert goers and will be conducted by Bob Krueger.

The band will feature the “The Purple Pageant March” along with “A Tribute to Harry James,” and “Funiculi, Funicula.” Starting at 6:00 p.m., there will be a variety of classic cars on display, so we recommend you come early to see these majestic automobiles. Bring a picnic dinner and enjoy a beautiful evening of music, family, and friends!

Ember Schrag EP Release Show with June Panic, June Panic's Wife July 26th

Local folk artist Ember Schrag will be releasing a new solo EP on Eh? Records on Monday, July 26. The release show will be Monday night at Clawfoot House at 1042 F St. with June Panic and June’s wife project, which is called June Panic’s Wife.

The show starts at 8 p.m. and has a $5 cover. Clawfoot House is Ember Schrag’s apartment; she has been running the venue since January of 2009.

June Panic is a singer-songwriter from Fargo, North Dakota. He has released several albums on the label Secretly Canadian and is known for the idiosyncratic imagery in his often home-recorded music. June Panic’s Wife is a raw and rocky project reminiscent of the Cowboy Junkies. Clawfoot House is the first date of their 2010 summer tour.

The Nebraska Jazz Orchestra is pleased to present the 2010 Nebraska Jazz Camp, which will be held this coming week here in Lincoln. NJO is proud to be able to continue to offer this outstanding educational experience for young musicians.

Next week, 45 campers from throughout the state and region will learn from the best local and regional jazz musicians, taking part in master classes, intensive rehearsals, playing in big bands and combos, gaining new knowledge and experience and enhancing their passions for music and the arts.

It's incomparable to any one-man band we've seen or heard. Biram and his squalling '59 Gibson hollow-body electric throw down the salvation with such gavel-like conviction that you'll actually start to believe his dose of snake oil just might cure the lame and make the blind see.

Lincoln Municipal Band Presents “Welcome to Lincoln: Special Olympics Recognition”

Join the Lincoln Municipal Band as they continue their 2010 Summer Concert Series on Sunday, July 18, 2010 at 7:00 p.m., with a concert entitled “Welcome to Lincoln.”

This concert, in recognition of Lincoln’s role in hosting this year’s Special Olympics, will be conducted by Carolyn Barber and will feature John Williams’ “Olympic Fanfare and Theme,” along with local favorites such as “Beautiful Nebraska,” and “Dear Old Nebraska U.” Bring a picnic dinner and enjoy a beautiful evening of music, family, and friends!

The featured guest soloist for the evening will be local trombonist Terry Rush. Mr. Rush will be performing Arthur Pryor’s “Love’s Enchantment,” which is sure to delight audiences young and old.

Experience Ana Sia with Bassthoven and UDM at the Bricktop July 10

Head down to The Bricktop (1427 O Street) for an epic show featuring electronic musician Ana Sia from San Francisco, Ultimate Downhill Machines from Omaha and Bassthoven from Lincoln. Doors open at 5 p.m., with the concert starting at 9 p.m. Tickets are $10 for 18+ before 10 p.m., $5 for 21+ before 10 p.m.

Celebrate 37 Years at the Zoo Bar with an Anniversary Street Festival July 9 & 10

One of the premier blues bars in the Midwest, the Zoo Bar began as a couple of tunes on a jukebox.
   
Larry Boehmer, then an art student at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, started hijacking the music, with owner Jim Ludwig’s consent, for about an hour a night, loading the machine full of Chicago blues. As more and more people were attracted to his selections, Boehmer was given the entire jukebox to program.
   
The first live act was booked in 1973, and 37 years later, the Zoo Bar is still going strong. On Friday, July 9 and Saturday, July 10, the venue is hosting an anniversary street festival featuring acts like Lil Ed and the Blues Imperials and locals Son del Llano, in addition to concerts held throughout the week.

Lincoln Bands Head to Omaha for Lincoln Invasion 2010 July 9th

The word “invasion” strikes fear into the heart of every zombie-conscious citizen – but thankfully, Lincoln Invasion 2010 is a migration of music, not the flesh-eating undead.
   
Friday, July 9 from 6:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m., 23 Lincoln-based bands will attempt to conquer the Benson neighborhood of Omaha, spreading the musical sounds of the city’s southerly sister.
   
An all-access pass costs $8 and grants passage to each of the six venues; otherwise individual entrance to each site costs $5. Age restrictions vary by venue. Tickets can be purchased at the venues July 9.
