Lincoln Municipal Band presents “John Philip Sousa: Marches and More”

Join the Lincoln Municipal Band as it continues its 2010 Summer Concert Series on Sunday, August 8, 2010 at7:00 p.m., with a concert dedicated to John Philip Sousa. This concert, conducted by Terry Rush, will celebrate the music of the March King. The band will feature “The University of Nebraska March” alongwith “The Flashing Eyes of Andalusia,” and “Solid Men to the Front.” Come celebrate the wonderfultradition of John Philip Sousa’s music and the Lincoln Municipal Band. Bring a picnic dinner, and enjoy abeautiful evening of music, family, and friends!

The featured guest soloist for the evening will be soprano Dawn Pawlewski Krogh. She will be performing“Musica Proibita” and “Zing! Zing! Naughty Marietta”.

All Lincoln Municipal Band concerts are held at the John Shildneck Memorial Bandshell in Antelope Park andare FREE and open to the public.

"Art of Rock" Festival Turns Up the Volume August 7th

Over the last week or so, downtown Lincoln has been decorated with numerous sidewalk surprises: bright, detailed chalk drawings promoting the “Art of Rock” festival.

This Saturday, the rock of both roll fame and the more common cement variety will be celebrated in the first annual festival, hosted by the Northeast Family Center’s Academy of Rock program.

“It’s going to be wild,” said Nick Tarlowski, who’s been an instructor with the Academy of Rock since it first started five years ago. “It’s just fun for everybody.”

The event begins at noon on Friday, and will feature a rock fashion show, rockstar makeovers, karaoke and air guitar, door prizes, sidewalk chalk and more, said program director and event organizer Jason Schmit. It will encompass 14^th Street from O Street to P Street, with events and concerts held at the Zoo Bar, Duffy’s Tavern and the Bourbon Theatre, as well.

Lutenist Kenneth Be to Give Recital, Lecture at Sheldon Museum of Art

The sounds of the Renaissance will fill the Sheldon Museum of Art Aug, 3 when lutenist and speaker Kenneth Be will give a recital and talk in conjunction with the exhibit "Voyage to Italia: Americans in Italy in the 19th Century."

Be (pronounced bay) has been performing lute music since 1974, has studied under notable lute players including Paul O'Dette and Nigel North, participated as a musician in the Boston Early Music Festival and has performed frequently in duet recitals with lutenist Ronn McFarlane. He has a deep interest in the role of music and the visual arts in past culture.

Lincoln Municipal Band Presents “On Broadway: Music from the Stage” August 1st

Join the Lincoln Municipal Band as it continues its 2010 Summer Concert Series on Sunday, August 1, 2010 at 7:00 p.m., with a concert entitled “On Broadway.” This concert will celebrate music composed for the dramatic stage and will be conducted by Bob Krueger.

The band will feature the “Gershwin Medley” along with “Selections from Les Miserables,” and “Symphonic Dances from Fiddler on the Roof.” At the concert, representatives from many of Lincoln’s theater organizations will be present to share information about their upcoming performances. Bring a picnic dinner, and enjoy a beautiful evening of music, family, and friends!

The featured guest soloist for the evening will be trumpeter Dean Haist.

All Lincoln Municipal Band concerts are held at the John Shildneck Memorial Bandshell in Antelope Park and are FREE and open to the public.

Lincoln Municipal Band Presents 'Young at Heart: Classic Cars on Display' July 25th

Join the Lincoln Municipal Band as they continue their 2010 Summer Concert Series on Sunday, July 25, 2010 at 7:00 p.m., with a concert entitled “Young at Heart.” This concert will celebrate our mature concert goers and will be conducted by Bob Krueger.

The band will feature the “The Purple Pageant March” along with “A Tribute to Harry James,” and “Funiculi, Funicula.” Starting at 6:00 p.m., there will be a variety of classic cars on display, so we recommend you come early to see these majestic automobiles. Bring a picnic dinner and enjoy a beautiful evening of music, family, and friends!

Ember Schrag EP Release Show with June Panic, June Panic's Wife July 26th

Local folk artist Ember Schrag will be releasing a new solo EP on Eh? Records on Monday, July 26. The release show will be Monday night at Clawfoot House at 1042 F St. with June Panic and June’s wife project, which is called June Panic’s Wife.

The show starts at 8 p.m. and has a $5 cover. Clawfoot House is Ember Schrag’s apartment; she has been running the venue since January of 2009.

June Panic is a singer-songwriter from Fargo, North Dakota. He has released several albums on the label Secretly Canadian and is known for the idiosyncratic imagery in his often home-recorded music. June Panic’s Wife is a raw and rocky project reminiscent of the Cowboy Junkies. Clawfoot House is the first date of their 2010 summer tour.

Sugar Free Allstars Close Music & Mozzarella Series with High-Energy Kids’ Rock

Acclaimed children’s group, Sugar Free Allstars will take the Music & Mozzarella stage for the first time Thursday, July 22, to close the popular concert series at the Lincoln Children’s Museum.
 
Music & Mozzarella is a free concert series that offers families a chance to enjoy the music of some of the top children’s musical acts in the nation.
 
Sugar Free Allstars are an Oklahoma City duo that create high-energy kids’ rock. Due to their various musical influences and unusual instrumentation, this funky organ/drum combo is tricky to classify. The music is a unique blend of funk, soul and gospel, all wrapped up in a rock and roll package.  Add to the mix children’s pop songwriting sensibilities and a high-energy live show and it’s easy to see why the group’s popularity is on the rise.

Listen to Young Musicians from Around the Country During the 2010 Nebraska Jazz Camp

The Nebraska Jazz Orchestra is pleased to present the 2010 Nebraska Jazz Camp, which will be held this coming week here in Lincoln. NJO is proud to be able to continue to offer this outstanding educational experience for young musicians.

Next week, 45 campers from throughout the state and region will learn from the best local and regional jazz musicians, taking part in master classes, intensive rehearsals, playing in big bands and combos, gaining new knowledge and experience and enhancing their passions for music and the arts.

Hell-Raising One-Man Band Scott H. Biram Hits the Bourbon Theatre July 16th

Lincoln Municipal Band Presents “Welcome to Lincoln: Special Olympics Recognition”

Join the Lincoln Municipal Band as they continue their 2010 Summer Concert Series on Sunday, July 18, 2010 at 7:00 p.m., with a concert entitled “Welcome to Lincoln.”

This concert, in recognition of Lincoln’s role in hosting this year’s Special Olympics, will be conducted by Carolyn Barber and will feature John Williams’ “Olympic Fanfare and Theme,” along with local favorites such as “Beautiful Nebraska,” and “Dear Old Nebraska U.” Bring a picnic dinner and enjoy a beautiful evening of music, family, and friends!

The featured guest soloist for the evening will be local trombonist Terry Rush. Mr. Rush will be performing Arthur Pryor’s “Love’s Enchantment,” which is sure to delight audiences young and old.
